Developer Worlds Beyond Studios (co-founded by Belgian Cederik Haverbeke, but located in the U.S.) makes online learning environments that are personal, playful, and powerful. Their upcoming product, Edorble, is a private virtual campus that can be accessed from a web browser or a next-generation VR headset. In an Edorble world, teachers can manage and conduct their classes, while users can move, communicate, and collaborate.
On the game’s blog, CEO Gabe Baker, explains how they are designing Edorble. As he has ample experience as an online teacher himself, he partly uses his gut instincts. He has a clear idea of what he would like. But more importantly Baker and his team do loads of research and listen to the needs of teachers. They have been visiting a number of online schools or schools with online programs (Ohio Connections Academy, Lorain Digital Academy, Lorain Community College), and the feedback they received from these meetings has proven to be invaluable.
Worlds Beyond Studios is actively reaching out to teachers worldwide. If you work in education and are interested in virtual worlds and/or virtual reality, you can sign up for the beta on their website.
