The craziest thing about We Who Are About To Die isn’t that it features a unique dynamic combat system, or thousands of intricate gear combinations that impact the fighting style of your gladiator. No, it’s the fact that it’s the result of the blood, sweat, and tears of just a single guy.
Deeply rooted in the Mount & Blade mod scene, solo developer Jordy Lakiere set out on this ambitious passion project on his own a couple of years ago. It’s both a testament to his talent, skill, and unmatched perseverance that the game looks as good as it does today.
In We Who Are About To Die you play an up and coming gladiator that’s rising through the ranks. Before you’ll be able to taste ultimate victory and glory, you will have died many, many times. Divine warriors in the arena, your gladiators only have one life. One that can get cut short very quickly by an accurate swing of a blade or a devestating axe blow to the skull.
A fresh gladiator also means a new chance to try a different strategy. Only those who will be able to master the deep physics based combat system will live long enough to make it to the Grand Stadium. Between fights you can use your gold to upgrade the skills and gear of your gladiator. Try to get the upper hand in various combat scenarios, featuring both single duels and skirmishes with multiple opponents and you’ll be one step closer to becoming the most famous gladiator of all time.
Building awareness around your game isn’t easy as a solo developer, but Lakiere was doing a good job using his Facebook profile to post regular developer updates. That was until Facebook gave him the thumbs down earlier this month and suspended his profile, and with it his access to the community he painstakingly built over the years.
He has since started to rebuild his following on Twitter, so please give him a follow if you’re interested in the game. We Who Are About To Die deserves all the attention it can get, and we rightly salute this ambitious effort.
