Cartamundi Digital is the digital division of Cartamundi, the world’s biggest manufacturer and distributor of playing cards and board games. Back in 2007, the company was founded by CEO Jelle Van de Velde and technical manager Kris Carron as Playlane. Over the years the Ghent based startup grew to become a world leader in digital children’s entertainment. The company was acquired by Cartamundi and morphed into Cartamundi Digital in 2013.
Having worked for big clients such as Studio 100, VRT and Walt Disney, the team of almost 20 professionals nowadays specializes in the development of magical hybrid game experiences. The marriage of the physical world with the digital realm isn’t easy and there are few developers that can pull it off in such interesting and creative ways.
As Cartamundi obtained the license to develop card games based on the catalog of Hasbro board games, Cartamundi Digital helped re-envision a lot of all-time classics like Monopoly, Guess Who? and Trivial Pursuit. With the aid of iCards technology they were able to add a fun digital components that give the games a neat virtual twist.
The card technology can be used in a variety of creative ways. Tech demos include splashing digital paint on a tablet, keeping track of a digital card collection or playing a catchy tune on the African drums. It’s even possible to send a personal greeting card pimped by the power of augmented reality. All this and much more is demonstrated on the iCards website. You can even download the application and request a set of demo cards to check out the possibilities of the technology for yourself. You can also follow them on Twitter and Facebook to get the latest news on their projects.
