Society is getting more digital by the second. Children of tomorrow are being prepared for that binary future by people who aren’t always up to scratch with the latest technology. With ViKiD (link in Dutch), a new educational web platform developed by one of the newest FLEGA family members Strongly Typed Solutions, young children and their teachers can learn the basics of future programming.
The project is the brain child of Peter Verswyvelen, a games veteran who’s been creating Amiga games since the mid 80’s. Having been a teacher for International Game Architecture and Design in Breda and Digital Arts and Entertainment in Kortrijk, he has noticed the shortcomings in the primary education of students and decided to do what he does best: write software to try and close that knowledge gap.
Described as “a bit like Scratch (link in Dutch), but mathematically and functionally oriented, like real computer scientists write programs” ViKiD has been greenlighted for preproduction by VAF/Gamefonds back in 2015. They dedicated a lot of time and resources on the prototype to make sure they got everything just right, but finally moved into production last year.
With Linguineo covering the language side and ViKiD pushing programming skills, our educational games are optimally preparing Flemish kids to not only get by in the future, but to help shape it themselves.
