The Gameological Society Staff declared a Flemish game as one of their favorite games for 2013, alongside the critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid Revengeance, the beautiful Far Cry 3 and the commercial bombshell The Last of Us.
Press X to Give Up, created within 2 days at the Nordic Game Jam, was developed by FLEGA member users Bram Michielsen and Jonatan ‘Joon’ Van Hove as well as Anders Boerup, Henrike Lode, Jonas Maaloe and Mads Johansen (with title design by Thomas Ryder). Congratulations to the team!
This disturbing game forces players to experience violence on a deeply personal level. The brief game places you in a matador’s leather shoes and has you face off against a monstrous bull. The fight itself isn’t so bad—bait it toward you, avoid getting gored, slip a sword in its neck, repeat—but it’s the outcome of the violence that gets you every time. Every hit you take pollutes the screen with more glitches and digital hisses, and every successful stab transforms the bull into a more grotesque and desperate version of itself. To beat the bull, you have to become an equally desperate beast, killing your opponent in a primal rage.
