Happy Volcano is a three-man videogame studio based in Leuven, founded in December 2013 by Jeroen Janssen (coder, business development), Peter Maasen (coder, writer) and David Prinsmel (artist).
In the spring of 2015 they released their first game, Lava Fever, a 2D action game on iOS about jumping into a volcano and surviving long enough to ultimately offer your soul to it. On the way down you navigate dangerous vents, filled with debris and sharp walls. The goal is to reach the magma chamber, an inferno of fireballs and misty clouds, and plunge into the magma lake. This will make you the hero you were always destined to be.
Right now Happy Volcano is working on an ambitious new game called Winter, a story driven exploration game in which you only see one tile of the game world at a time. Winter is the gripping tale of a young girl, trapped inside a world that isn’t exactly how she remembers it. It looks familiar, but doesn’t feel like the world she once knew. For the story, Happy Volcano is collaborating with Joost Vandecasteele, a stand-up comedian and an award winning Flemish author. He was also a member of the internationally renowned theater collective Abatoir Fermé and writes columns for some of Belgium’s leading newspapers and magazines.
Together, Happy Volcano and Mister Vandecasteele applied for the open call for literary games, organised by the Dutch government a few months ago. Out of 47 proposals, Winter was selected together with 4 other games and already received some initial funding (€7.500). This month Happy Volcano presented their proof-of-concept to receive additional funding. The game already looks promising and we look forward to hearing more from these talented guys!
