Great Flemish gaming projects keep popping up on Kickstarter, like On a Roll, an amazing looking rollerblading game that up until now has been the passion project of just one man: Jelle Van den Audenaeren. Back in 1997, when he was a kid, Jelle took the rollerblades of his mum for a spin. He has been obsessed with the sport ever since. “It took me a long time to get any good at it, but I immediately fell in love with the creative part of skating. I could do whatever I could think of on my skates”, Jelle recounts on Kickstarter.
When Jelle got into rollerblading, he also started daydreaming about a rollerblading game. When Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater came out for the PlayStation, he played it for hours on end, knew all the tricks and secretly imagined that the characters were on rollerblades instead of skateboards. 3 or 4 years and another PlayStation generation later, developer Rage Software build Rolling, a fantastic rollerblading game that came very close to what Jelle had envisioned in his head.
12 years have passed since then and nothing similar has come along, so Jelle is building his own next-generation rollerblading game. He has been working in the 3D movie industry for 10 years, which gave him a solid knowledge of the software that is used for making both movies and games. He has been working on the project single-handedly for almost 4 years with some very impressive results (a fully functional prototype), but now it’s time for the next big step.
He would like to focus full-time on the game (thus far, he has been developing the game in his spare time) and hire a few talented friends to not only make the game bigger and better, but also to be able to finish it sooner and (if the necessary stretch goals are met) even release it on consoles as well as pc.
